About the American Humanist Association

The American Humanist Association (AHA) has stood as the voice of humanism in the United States for over 80 years. We strive to bring about a progressive society where being good without a god is an accepted and respected way to live life. We are accomplishing this through our defense of civil liberties and secular governance, by our outreach to the growing number of people without traditional religious faith, and through a continued refinement and advancement of the humanist worldview.

We’re very concerned about the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025, a comprehensive and meticulously-crafted plan to overthrow the United States’ democratic components and instill theocratic mandates fashioned by radical rightwing conservatives, and thus seeks to educate voters about the dangers of this Presidential Transition Project by empowering local youth leaders. Join us and become a leader at the forefront of secular democracy defense!

We want a future where women are empowered to make their own sexual and reproductive health decisions; where LGBTQIA+ communities are liberated and safe; where public monies go to public schools that don’t preach one religion; where our government has checks and balances; where our courts are fair and just! Everyone needs to know how dire the threat of Project 2025 is – if we don’t act now, we risk losing hard-won progress and facing a future where our fundamental rights are compromised.

About the Role

The American Humanist Association is seeking to hire four (4) current or recent college students as Democracy Defense Fellows. These organizers will manage a grassroots campaign that both educates voters about the dangers of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 and encourages people to register to vote and vote. This issue-based informational campaign is part of the AHA’s Democracy Not Theocracy Campaign.

Each organizer, depending on their location, will cover one of the following states: Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania.

Defense Democracy Fellows are expected to commit twenty (20) hours per week to this role. Once hired, organizers will be required to attend a training session with AHA staff. The role will conclude on November 8, 2024.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage a grassroots GOTV campaign that educates their college campus and local community about the dangers of the Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025.

  • Conduct phone banking and text banking for the AHA’s Democracy Not Theocracy GOTV initiatives.

  • Dependable, trustworthy, and communicative
  • Comfortable initiating conversations with strangers in person and over the phone
