WASHINGTON – The following is a statement from American Humanist Association Communications Director Court Beyer in response to today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in West Virginia et al. v. B.P.J.
“Today’s decision is a blow for trans rights and sets a dangerous precedent that will mean further marginalization and ostracization for trans individuals. To deny a child the ability to play sports with their peers is to deny them joy, opportunities to build lifelong skills, and of course, the sense of belonging that so many young people crave. It’s as cruel as it is unfair.
“The end goal of these efforts has always been clear – to make it impossible for trans people to exist as themselves in public life. We are devastated for our friends, family and neighbors for whom today’s ruling is a cruel reminder of how far we have yet to go in this fight.
“To be clear: this ruling doesn’t end the moral or legal case for trans dignity, which we Humanists plan to be loud and proud in our advocacy of, as we have been. We will continue to show up in the halls of power, in our communities, and in the culture for the trans community, because at the end of the day, this fight is a matter of human dignity, autonomy, and the right to self-determination.”
