Ever since Thomas Paine said, “We have it in our power to begin the world over again,” Humanists have fought to secure and preserve American democracy. And with Christian Nationalism threatening everything we’ve fought for, we’re leaving nothing to chance. 

We’re mobilizing our supporters and local groups across the country to defend our civil liberties, get our neighbors out to vote, and have an impact on this election.

1. Handwritten Postcards to Voters

We’re mobilizing our members and chapters to send thousands of handwritten postcards to Virginia voters, urging them to vote yes on Question One, which would enshrine reproductive freedom as a fundamental right in Virginia’s state constitution.

If you’re a member or belong to an AHA chapter, let us know how many postcards you’d want using this form. We’ll mail them to you, along with suggested messaging from our partners, as well as a list of addresses. You’ll write a greeting on the postcards, provide a stamp and mail them in time to get people out to vote!

Did you know? The AHA was the first national membership organization to support the legal right to an abortion, and Humanists from Emma Goldman to Gloria Steinem have led the fight for reproductive freedom across generations.

2. Voter Registration Drives

Humanists believe that for a democracy to function properly, everyone needs to have their voice heard. We’re partnering with our chapters and affiliates to lead voter registration drives in their communities.

Local groups that are interested in conducting a voter registration drive will receive training and technical support from the AHA, be connected to local partners, and receive grants to help make their events possible.

3. Recruiting Humanists for Election Protection

For out democracy to work, it has to be fair and accessible for everyone to participate. But vigilante groups and radical Christian Nationalists within our own government have threatened to interfere with our free and fair elections.

We’re recruiting Humanists across the country and connecting them with national partners to help train them to protect the vote. If you want to volunteer to protect voters – or if you want to conduct a training for members of your local group – sign up here, and our organizing team will reach out and get you started.

4. Poll Outings

Get more Humanists to the polls by making a social outing of it! We’re helping Humanist groups organize plans to carpool to the polls together to vote before election day. If you’re interested in setting up an event for your group, fill out this form and we’ll follow up with everything you need to make it happen.

5. Fight Christian Nationalism Tour

Join AHA Executive Director Fish Stark on a nine-city speaking tour this fall where he will sound the alarm on Christian Nationalism and the threat it poses to our civil liberties, and fire up members and chapters to help protect our democracy.
