Our Work

Since 1941, the American Humanist Association has been fighting for a more compassionate world, because the world doesn’t get better by chance.

It gets better by choice.

Appignani Humanist Legal Center (AHLC)

The legal arm of the American Humanist Association. Through trial and appellate litigation, amicus activity and other legal work, our team of attorneys provides the zealous advocacy that Humanists and others need to defend constitutional rights and strengthen the wall of separation between church and state.

Center for Freethought Equality (CFE)

The advocacy and political arm of the American Humanist Association. CFE advocates for the issues the Humanist and atheist community cares about – like separation of church and state, protecting civil liberties, and advancing progressive policies.

Chapters & Community

Our network of chapters and affiliates bring Humanists together across the country for community, collective care and acts of service.

The Humanist Society

The Humanist Society endorses and prepares Humanist professionals to lead life celebrations and support people during difficult times. Their celebrants, chaplains, lay leaders and invocators provide millions of people with a meaningful alternative to traditional religious services and ceremonies across the nation.

"Seeing people realize that feeding people who are hungry, talking with someone who needs an ear, is something that they can just do without a formal organization or government program is really cool. We take care of us, and that is the driver for true positive change."

When we choose action, we change the world.

Help us fight for a more compassionate future.
