(Washington, D.C., October 4, 2019) – Humanist and nontheist activists across Kentucky have joined with attorneys at the American Humanist Association in a warning letter following Governor Matthew Bevin’s (R) blatant Christian proselytization in a recent public video.

On October 1, 2019, Bevin shared a video promoting Focus on the Family’s “Bring Your Bible to School Day” on his collected official social media channels. The video, in addition to endorsing the flagship event of the Christian nationalist group, flouts the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.

The American Humanist Association’s concerns extend past the obvious constitutional violation. As the letter notes, “Even setting aside the legal/constitutional implications of such actions (and there are many), common decency dictates that you show more respect for those non-Christians whom you serve (and who pay your salary).”

The letter is co-signed by the Tri-State Freethinkers, headquartered in Union, KY, and the Humanist Forum of Central Kentucky, headquartered in Lexington, KY.

Read today’s warning letter here.

###

The American Humanist Association (AHA) works to protect the rights of humanists, atheists, and other nontheistic Americans. The AHA advances the ethical and life-affirming worldview of humanism, which—without beliefs in gods or other supernatural forces—encourages individuals to live informed and meaningful lives that aspire to the greater good of humanity.

Special thanks to the Louis J. Appignani Foundation and the Herb Block Foundation for their support of the Appignani Humanist Legal Center.
