The American Humanist Association is proud to announce that Candace Gorham has been elected the new President of the organization’s Board of Directors. She has been an AHA Board Member since 2021, became Vice President in 2022 and stepped into the Presidency last month.
Gorham is a licensed mental health counselor and author of The Ebony Exodus Project: Why Some Black Women are Walking Out on Religion–and Others Should Too and On Death, Dying, and Disbelief. She is a former ordained minister turned atheist activist, researcher, and writer on issues related to religion, secular social justice, and the African-American community. She is also a member of the Secular Therapist Project, The Clergy Project, and the Secular Student Alliance Speaker’s Bureau.
Gorham’s presidency heralds an era of vibrant, new leadership at the AHA. The organization plans to announce the appointment of a new Executive Director on Tuesday.
“It is a great honor to have been selected as the next president of AHA,” Gorham stated. “As a humanist, I believe wholeheartedly in the AHA’s mission to affirm ‘the dignity of every human being’ by engaging in activities for the ‘betterment of all of society and the world in which we live.’ Having been a member of the board since 2021, I’ve seen firsthand the good work the organization does and I look forward to being a part of that work in the future.”
Deputy Director Nicole Carr said, “We are thrilled to have Candace at the helm of the AHA. She brings fresh, energizing leadership to our board; staff and board members alike are looking forward to working with her.”
