Yesterday’s election results reflect the continued cultural divide in America. We saw a number of victories for humanists, including wins for first time candidates Megan Hunt in the Nebraska State Senate and Howard Watts in the Nevada State House, as well as incumbent humanists and allies in the House of Representatives, like Congressional Freethought Caucus co-chairs Representatives Jared Huffman and Jamie Raskin.  Humanists everywhere are disappointed that Trump’s racist, anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-humanist rhetoric and policies weren’t completely repudiated by voters, as evidenced by progressive losses in the Senate and in a number of governor races. As much as progressive activism is on the rise, more of us must join the fight if we want to avoid seeing America ruled by those who place their personal interests above what’s right.  The American Humanist Association will join with others to bolster our nation’s highest principles, seek equality for nontheists, and keep the interests of humanity and the world we live in first and foremost.
