Dear Friend,
Great news! Last week Representative Jared Polis reintroduced the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA) which if passed will prohibit discrimination and harassment on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in public schools.
We told you about the SNDA last year when it was in the 112th Congress, and we were all greatly disappointed when it didn’t end up passing. That’s why it’s so important that we work together right now to demand that Congress do its job and protect LGBT students.
According to the 2011 National School Climate Survey, 8 out of 10 surveyed LGBT students experience harassment at school, and almost two thirds reported feeling unsafe. This is an unacceptable situation for our public schools, and we need to act now so that all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, feel safe when going to class.
Thank you for standing up for equality.
Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
Executive Director
