WASHINGTON – The following is a statement from American Humanist Association Executive Director Fish Stark in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s split decision in U.S. v. Skremetti.
“This decision is going to cause immeasurable pain, suffering, and heartache for families across America. Gender-affirming care saves lives, period. There is no moral high ground in denying children the care they need.
“Additionally, this decision completely ignores scientific consensus on the safety and efficacy of medical interventions for transitioning youth. It’s a perfect example of the religious right’s magical thinking; the same medications prescribed to treat unwanted hair growth for cis girls don’t suddenly become dangerous when prescribed to a trans girl for the same purpose. Allowing puberty blockers and hormone therapy for everything but gender-affirming care is simply discrimination against trans kids.
“Every child deserves the freedom to grow into who they are. We stand with trans kids and their families, because humanists have always stood for people’s rights to bodily autonomy and self-determination. The future we humanists are fighting for is one where all young people–trans or cis–are met with empathy, care, and the support to thrive as they are. It’s a future worth fighting for, and we will carry on, together.”
