Democracy Not Theocracy Postcard Party Toolkit
Initiative by the American Humanist Association
Thank you for your interest in hosting a Postarding Party, whether it be you and a bunch of your friends, or a party of one! Sending postcards that encourage people to make a plan to vote, whether by yourself or with a group is a great way to help get out the vote, and you’ll have a great time while doing so!
For this campaign, we are:
1) providing you with postcards with anti-Project-2025 messaging; and
2) providing you with swing-state voter contacts who have not registered to vote.
This instruction document tells you step by step everything you need to know to host your own postcarding party, how to order our special Democracy Not Theocracy postcards, and how to receive swing state contacts from us.
Encouraging people to vote and participate in democracy is so important. Let’s make an impact together! We know that ensuring everyone has a plan to vote is essential to combatting the dangerous, looming threat of Project 2025. By sending postcards that inform people of Project 2025 and remind them to make a plan to vote, you are on the front lines of maintaining our DEMOCRACY, NOT THEOCRACY.
If you need any support, please email our team at democracy@americanhumanist.org.
Instructions
1. Begin planning for your Postcarding Party (or solo postcarding) as soon as possible to be as successful as possible.
2. Find out or estimate how many people will be attending your event, and how many postcards you would like each person to complete. Then, CLICK ON THIS LINK TO ORDER YOUR AHA POSTCARDS AND RECEIVE YOUR CONTACTS (by Wed. 10/23). Contacts will be emailed from democracy@americanhumanist.org to the email address you provide in the form.
a. Budget several days for your postcards to arrive after placing your order.
b. Please note: AHA will not be providing postage. Postcarding Party hosts will need to obtain and supply postage themselves (postcard stamps are $0.56). However, if you are an AHA local group, you may apply for our grants to receive funds for postage!
3. Brainstorm the logistics of what you would like your Postcarding Party to look like.
a. Who and how many people will be attending?
b. Where will the gathering take place? Your house, a coffee shop, the park?
c. When will this party take place?
d. What you’ll need to make sure to bring to your party, at a minimum, are your postcards and your contacts from the AHA, pens, and postage.
4. We’d love to join you! If you would like to request the virtual presence of AHA Executive Director Fish Stark or another AHA staff member to rally your participants, let us know! We’d be happy to help you kick off your event and speak to attendees about why participating in this election is so important.
a. Contact democracy@americanhumanist.org
5.Throw your Postcarding Party! Woohoo!
a. Please inform your attendees that this is a nonpartisan get out the vote campaign, and that the American Humanist Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Make sure your guests are aware that they must refrain from writing or including any language or messages that endorse a political candidate or political party.
b. With permission from your postcarding party attendees, share photos or anecdotes on social media and tag or mention the American Humanist Association and the hashtag #DemocracyNotTheocracy.
c. Please Note: please keep contact information confidential. Be sure to obscure any voter information—like addresses on envelopes—before you share any photos and, once the Postcarding Party has concluded, shred any sheets you used that contained contact information.
6. After your postcarding party, please make sure to submit this “Post Postcarding Party” google form so that we may uplift your efforts!
Happy Postcarding!
Project 2025 Postcard Messages Samples
While we encourage each one of you to write messages with personal touches, we also want to provide you with some sample messages you could use when you are writing on the back of your postcard that both inform the recipient about Project 2025 and encourage them to vote.
***Note: Please remember that the American Humanist Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. PLEASE DO NOT allow the writing or inclusion of any language or messages that endorse a political candidate or political party.***
