Dear Friend,
Religious conservatives in Congress are trying to use the tax reform bill as a way of destroying the Johnson amendment, and we need your help to make sure that their efforts don’t succeed.
The House of Representatives recently passed their tax reform package, and we want to make sure that bad language from the House bill doesn’t make its way into the final Senate tax reform bill. Specifically, we are concerned about Section 5201 of the House bill, which would allow houses of worship and other nonprofits to endorse candidates for public office, while still maintaining their 501(c)(3) benefits, such as tax-deductible donations and tax-free spending.
Our elections are already suffering from an influx of dark money and a lack of transparency. It’s vital that you stand up now to make sure that one of the last safeguards protecting our elections, the Johnson Amendment, isn’t weakened by religious conservatives in Congress.
Thank you for defending the Johnson Amendment.
Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
Executive Director
