Dear Friend,
It’s that time of year—the so-called “War on Christmas”—when the Religious Right attempts to break the law by decorating public spaces with Christian nativity scenes and other religious displays.
In many of these cases, the American Humanist Association’s vigilant legal team quickly responded to uphold the separation between church and state—such as in November when a Christian nativity display on the lawn of a courthouse in Baxter County, Arkansas, was taken down as a result of our efforts.
But the Religious Right isn’t backing down and extremists are trying harder than ever to push their religion into the public sphere. In fact, H. Res. 564 was just introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to express the “sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas,” meaning that they should be free to be used on public ground in violation of the Constitution.
House Resolution 564 may open the doors to government sponsorship of Christianity in government buildings across the country. Can you take a moment to contact your Representative and ask him or her to oppose this disastrous resolution?
This resolution already has 35 co-sponsors, and could gain more in the coming days. We need to tell Congress to focus on issues that matter instead of trying to inject religion into people’s lives. Use our simple action alert system to tell your member of Congress not to support this resolution.
Thank you for fighting for the separation of church and state.
Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
