Dear Friend,
Thank you for helping to make yesterday’s American Humanist Association congressional briefing on international religious freedom a success!
Over 1,500 members like you took action last week and asked your Senators and Representatives to attend this important briefing, co-sponsored with the Center for Inquiry and the Secular Coalition for America. Thanks to you, both rooms in the House and Senate were packed with congressional staffers who learned about humanism and our increased involvement in protecting the free expression rights of atheists abroad.
Now Congress is finally paying attention—and I need you to help take the next step in preserving the rights of nontheists around the world.
The House of Representatives recently introduced House Resolution 290 calling on President Obama and the State Department to demand the repeal of blasphemy laws worldwide. Will you take just one minute to write to your Representative and ask her or him to support this bill?
As you know, blasphemy laws greatly affect atheists in particular—their efforts to promote critical thinking and progressive values are often seen as “hatred” toward the majority religion. This results in dangerous consequences—from serving jail time to even capital punishment.
Not all humanists can travel to Washington, DC to join AHA’s lobbyists in advocating the humanist agenda to Congress, but by using our simple action alert system you can make your voice heard. Speak up for true religious freedom—the freedom to believe and not believe—by asking your Representative to support House Resolution 290 and end blasphemy laws.
This is an issue of vital importance, and I thank you in advance for taking the time to help defend the rights of nontheists here at home in America and around the globe.
Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
Executive Director
