Take Action: Tell Congress to Support the Respect for Marriage Act!

July 20, 2011 Action Alerts

Great news! Yesterday, White House spokesman Jay Carney told White House reporters that President Obama fully supports the Respect for Marriage Act, and the administration would no longer uphold the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), a bill which limits the legal definition of marriage to a union between one man and one woman, in a court of law.

Stand with the American Humanist Association and urge your Senators to support the Respect for Marriage Act right now.

The Respect for Marriage Act (S.598), introduced in the Senate by Senators Dianne Feinstein (CA), Patrick Leahy (VT), and Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) in March, would effectively repeal DOMA in its entirety. The American Humanist Association joined a coalition of dozens of progressive groups to call on Congress to support the Respect for Marriage Act.

Please take a moment to contact your Senators and ask them to support the Respect for Marriage Act.The American Humanist Association supports the marriage rights of all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation. The LGBT community should no longer be discriminated against in the eyes of the federal government.

This bill is a vital step forward for LGBT equality. I’m asking you, as a supporter of humanism and LGBT rights, to make a difference and take action right now.
