Dont Let the Congressional Recess Turn into a Vacation

Dear Friend,

In August, Congress will be taking a nearly month-long recess. This means members of Congress will be back in their districts, meeting with constituents about important legislation and their plans for the rest of this year and the next session of Congress.

This is a great opportunity for humanists across the country to let their Senators and Representative know how they feel about a variety of legislation that impacts church-state separation, such as:

  • the World War II Memorial Prayer Act, which has passed Congress and will allow for the placement of a plaque inscribed with a prayer at the World War II monument in the nation’s capital
  • the Darwin Day Resolution, which is re-introduced in every session of Congress and repudiates intelligent design while affirming the validity of evolution
  • the Scholarships for Kids Act, which would force the federal government to fund private religious schools

As a member of the American Humanist Association and one of our most engaged supporters, I encourage you to take time to meet with your members of Congress while they are back home, either by attending a town hall meeting or visiting their district office, to let them know how you feel about this legislation and your views on church-state separation.
