The American Humanist Association is satisfied by the verdict found in the Derek Chauvin trial by the Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis, MN. Chauvin’s actions were egregious, and we support the court’s decision to convict Chauvin on all three charges in the death of George Floyd.

The AHA condemns the violent, racist acts of police brutality that continue to permeate our society. The tragic and senseless murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis was a case of misuse of power by law enforcement. Our hearts are with the family and friends of Floyd, who had to go through this grueling process while still grieving their father, brother, and friend, and with the countless families that continue to be impacted by police brutality. They deserve justice, and we call for a renewed effort toward police reform.

Although satisfactory, the outcome of this trial is not a solution to the systemic issues that plague this country. Since testimony began in Chauvin’s trial, more than three people a day have died at the hands of law enforcement. There is still so much work we need to do to keep law enforcement accountable and to ensure a safer future for all. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of Daunte Wright, Adam Toledo, and everyone affected by recent police brutality incidents.

As humanists, and Americans, we need to stand against racism and in solidarity with communities of color. We must honor our humanistic values of empathy and ethics by working together to help reform systems that have historically caused harm to marginalized populations.
