Moving Forward with Social Justice at the AHA

As of February 2022, the American Humanist Association has dissolved the four social justice alliances, including the Black Humanist Alliance, Latinx Humanist Alliance, LGBTQ Humanist Alliance, and Feminist Humanist Alliance. While our work is no longer channeled through alliances, our commitment to affect change and create spaces for humanists into which they can bring their entire selves to our movement continues. This decision was not made lightly, but it allows the AHA to take necessary steps to build a more inclusive, equitable, and comprehensive strategic approach to our social justice work moving forward.

The alliances were long integral in the AHA’s social justice work. They started grant programs to fund local activism, managed a scholarship fund for the AHA’s annual conference, held their own conferences and events to bring together members from across the country, led policy campaigns, offered up their expertise for capacity building among our general membership, and more. We are incredibly grateful to the many people who dedicated their time, energy, and expertise to the success of these groups over the years and we will continue to seek their guidance as we move forward.
