Fred Edwords, director of communications for the American Humanist Association, has been offered, and has accepted, the position of leading a new freethought organization. The United Coalition of Reason is being created for the purpose of developing coalitions of local humanist, freethought, atheist, Humanistic Jewish, and Ethical Culture organizations all over the country. These coalitions will be modeled on the successful Philadelphia Coalition of Reason.
In accepting this new job, Fred is leaving the employ of the AHA. But this doesn’t end his connection with the institution he’s served for nearly 29 years in various capacities. Humanism still needs his knowledge, experience, and advice. So the AHA is contracting with Fred as a consultant on retainer, and thus you’ll still see Fred involved in AHA outreach and strategy from time to time. Fred has also agreed to serve on the AHA’s new Board of Advisors, will maintain his involvement with the Humanist magazine, and will volunteer his support for our work as he is best able in his available time.
For decades, beginning with his role as a local chapter leader in 1977, Fred was a key engine behind humanism at the American Humanist Association. He went on to be executive director for fifteen years and editor of the Humanist for twelve. Rarely has our movement encountered someone with his remarkable combination of traits—a firebrand speaker and writer imbued with patience, thoughtfulness, dedication, and extraordinary intelligence. His work for the AHA has exemplified humanism beautifully. And as we remain connected, we wish him our best in this exciting new endeavor.

The American Humanist Association (www.americanhumanist.org) advocates for the rights and viewpoints of humanists. Founded in 1941 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., its work is extended through more than 100 local chapters and affiliates across America.
Humanism is a progressive philosophy of life that, without theism, affirms our responsibility to lead ethical lives of value to self and humanity.
