South Carolina Residents: Stop Cuts to Public Colleges over LGBTQ Book

Facebook Twitter Email Share
April 29, 2014 Action Alerts, News

Dear Friend,

Did you hear the news? South Carolina’s House of Representatives voted to pass a bill that would cut funding from the College of Charleston and the University of South Carolina Upstate in Spartanburg over concerns about LGBTQ reading material assigned to students. This bill now moves on to the Senate and Governor Nikki Haley for approval before the cuts are finalized.

Help us ensure that religious conservatives in the state legislature can’t use their anti-LGBTQ bias as a way of punishing public schools. Contact your State Senator today to tell him or her that you oppose the public college cuts in the budget bill.

LGBTQ equality is making vast strides across the country, and one of the reasons for recent successes is increased awareness of the LGBTQ community and the important issues they face. One of the best ways to spread this knowledge is through literature and entertainment, such as the reading materials being assigned in some South Carolina schools. But if Religious Right leaders had their way, they would ban all literature that supports the LGBTQ community.

College is meant to be an environment where students can learn about others and the world they live in. Preventing the teaching of LGBTQ issues is wrong and a disservice to an entire generation of South Carolinian students.

Oppose cuts to public colleges in the budget bill by contacting your State Senator now!

Thank you for standing up against intolerance.

Sincerely,
