Dear Friends,
Yesterday, the Scholarships for Opportunities and Results Act (SOAR), a revival and expansion of the District of Columbia voucher program, was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives. This program, which provides private school tuition stipends to qualifying students, funnels federal money into religious charter schools.
This bill now faces action in the Senate, and we need your help to stop it.
This bill is strongly opposed by the National Coalition for Public Education, the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC Mayor Vincent Gray and President Barack Obama.
If this bill passes, your taxpayer dollars would be forced to support private religious schools. It also fails to take into account the students and faculty who are not offered protection under the D.C. Human Rights Act, putting LGBT families especially at risk of discrimination and harassment.
The fact remains: religious schools shouldn’t receive any form of subsidy from the government. I need you to send a strong message to your Senators and ask them to respect the separation between church and state.
Sincerely,
Roy Speckhardt
Executive Director
