Take Action: Tell President Obama To Stop Faith-Based Employment Discrimination!
In 2002, President Bush implemented Executive Order 13279, a policy allowing faith-based organizations receiving federal funding to hire and fire employees on the basis of religion. While on the campaign trail in 2008, President Obama vowed to reform the faith-based initiative to prevent this form of discrimination, but has yet to make good on this promise.
Representative Bobby Scott (D-VA) recently called attention to this issue by holding a press conference, which the American Humanist Association attended, honoring the 70th anniversary of President Roosevelt issuing Executive Order 8802. E.O. 8802, also known as the Fair Employment Act, was the “first federal action …. to promote equal opportunity and prohibit employment discrimination in the United States.”
The American Humanist Association supports this initiative as an active member of the C.A.R.D Coalition (The Coalition Against Religious Discrimination) in Washington D.C., and now we’re asking you to show your support as well.
Contact President Obama to put an end to faith-based employment discrimination, and rescind Executive Order 13279 immediately. No employee should be hired or fired from their job on religious grounds, and no organization receiving federal funds should have the authority to make these discriminatory decisions without consequence.
