MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR: What Are Humanists Thankful For?

Whenever I share the fact that I’m an atheist to a person I’ve just met, the most common question asked is, “If you don’t believe in God, where do you find meaning in life?” So it didn’t surprise me when a reporter contacted the American Humanist Association this week to ask what humanists are thankful for this Thanksgiving season, but it reminds me of how far we still have yet to go to convince the general public that humanists and atheists have plenty of meaning, inspiration, and gratitude for the one life we have. For me, I’m thankful for delicious food, loving family and friends, and the opportunity to watch the Redskins-Cowboys game---the best rivalry in football!

Next week is our Thanksgiving issue, and I want to hear from you! What are you thankful for this season? Do you have any special Thanksgiving recipes you’re especially proud of and would like to share? Write to us at hnn@americanhumanist.org and we’ll publish your comments next week!
