Humanist Voices in Verse: The Reason Rally by Harold Saferstein

This week we’re pleased to publish a poem inspired by the Reason Rally on March 24, 2012 by Harold Saferstein. Harold received his M.D. from the University of Illinois and completed his dermatology training at Temple University. He lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, with his wife, Doreen, and is an active member of the Humanist Society of Greater Phoenix.

If you’d like to contribute original poetry to Humanist Voices in Verse, write to hnn@americanhumanist.org with “Poetry” in the subject line. Please send no more than three poems for consideration per week.

The Reason Rally (2012)

March 24, a Saturday, there was just one place to be.
It was the Reason Rally in Washington, D.C.

The Rally was expensive, attendees didn’t have to pay
The cost was paid by FFRF, CFI and AHA.

American Atheists paid their share as did Secular Coalition,
Other organization chipped in too, which explains the free admission.

James Randi, Richard Dawkins, Dan Barker, P.Z. Myers
Were among the many speakers who lit some freethought fires.

The crowd was enthusiastic, no one was heard to complain.
Despite the wind, the cold, the clouds, and then, of course, the rain.

We stood for many hours, we were, indeed, quite tired
But we came away from Washington delighted and inspired.

T’was the largest secular gathering the world has ever known.
So nice to know, as freethinkers, that we are not alone.

---Harold Saferstein
